Know it, or just recognise it?

Use a short self-test to find the difference between familiar notes and understanding.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Before reopening a chapter, try explaining one idea without your notes. Compare your attempt with the course material. Make the missing points the purpose of your next session.

A practical method

01

Choose a narrow question

Pick one question from the syllabus. ‘Explain how a confidence interval is interpreted’ is more useful than ‘learn statistics’. Use the type of answer expected in your course: an explanation, a calculation, a diagram or an argument.

02

Make an attempt

Close the material and write your answer. If you get stuck, mark the point where you stopped. That information is useful; the exercise is a way to identify what you need to work on.

03

Check and correct

Compare with the lecture notes, an approved solution or feedback from your teacher. Separate a missing fact from a misunderstanding of the method. Write a correction you can explain in your own words.

04

Come back to the question

Try again in a later session, using a different example if possible. Keep a small list of questions that remain difficult. Choose future practice from that list rather than repeatedly testing only what feels easy.

A worked example

A worked example: after a lecture on demand and supply, draw both curves from memory. Explain what happens after a supply change. Check the direction and assumptions against the course notes. If the graph is correct but the explanation is weak, practise the explanation next.

A common pitfall

Looking at an answer while writing your own can turn a self-test into copying. Decide when you will check, and keep the two stages separate.

Put it into practice

Name one question in the focus timer. Use the session to attempt, check and record the next task.
