After 1945: blocs, independence, actors

Final-year concepts · Worked example and 4 exercises with solutions, at your pace.

The principle, simply

The Cold War combined ideological, strategic and economic rivalry without being constant direct warfare between the leading powers. Decolonisation changed sovereignty along different paths. New states and non-aligned actors pursued their own aims rather than merely following superpowers.

WORKED EXAMPLE

From principle to reasoning

Analyse a crisis at local and international scales. Identify each actor’s aims, means and changing position.

Solve a problem in this subject

  1. Locate

Identify period, actors, place and document type. Dates matter when they locate actions within processes.

  2. Separate fact and interpretation

Testimony records experience or viewpoint. Compare author, audience, context and other sources before generalising.

  3. Explain connections

Distinguish causes, triggers and consequences. Organise ideas supported by precise examples, not an unexplained chronology.

  4. Qualify

Compare perspectives and scales. State what evidence shows, omits and cannot establish.

YOUR TURN

01 · Try before checking

Why is a two-bloc map insufficient?

One hint

Look for actors outside that opposition.

Reveal and understand the solution

Independence movements, non-aligned states, local conflicts and divisions within blocs complicate the picture. Maps simplify; analysis restores actors.

Compare method, conditions and answer; identify the exact part to revisit.

IMPROVE THROUGH PRACTICE

Three additional challenges with solutions

Start with the first challenge. Write your method before opening a hint; use the solution to find the first step that needs work.

Does Cold War mean no wars occurred?

A hint to get started

Separate direct superpower war from regional conflicts.

Step-by-step solution
  1. The term describes global confrontation without general direct war between the superpowers.
  2. Armed conflicts nevertheless occurred in various regions.
  3. Analyse local actors and international connections together.

Why do decolonisation processes follow different paths?

A hint to get started

Compare actors, power relations and negotiations.

Step-by-step solution
  1. Colonial structures and mobilisation differ.
  2. Some processes rely mainly on negotiations, others involve war.
  3. Compare specified cases and stages rather than imposing one path.

Which step did you miss? Retry without help, then explain why the method works.

Does a newly independent non-aligned state have no relations with either bloc?

A hint to get started

Non-alignment is not absence of relations.

Step-by-step solution
  1. It asserts autonomy from the blocs.
  2. Trade or cooperation with several powers can continue.
  3. Examine actual choices and constraints rather than the diplomatic label alone.

Which step did you miss? Retry without help, then explain why the method works.

The trap to avoid

Do not reduce every conflict to superpower rivalry or every independence to one pattern.

Without notes, can you…

  • Explain the principle in your own words?
  • Rebuild the diagram and its connections?
  • Solve the exercise and justify the method?
