Planning

Behind on coursework? Start with an inventory.

Make a catch-up plan from remaining tasks, deadlines and available time.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Write down the unfinished work and its deadlines. Estimate the essential tasks first. Compare the total with your available time before promising yourself a new timetable.

THE METHOD AT A GLANCEFind the gap before filling the calendar.
  1. 01InventoryRequired work and dates.
  2. 02Break downGive each task a finish.
  3. 03CompareWork needed vs time available.
  4. 04DecideAdjust scope or discuss options.

A practical method

01

List what is unfinished

Use assignment instructions and course notes to make one list. Separate a required submission from an optional reading. If you are unsure what matters for assessment, ask your teacher instead of guessing.

02

Make the next task small enough

Break ‘finish the report’ into find evidence, outline sections, draft an argument and check the references. A task should have a clear finish line. It is easier to see progress when the finish line is visible.

03

Check the arithmetic

Estimate the task minutes and compare them with the time before the deadline. Include time to check the result. If the numbers do not fit, decide what can change before you schedule: scope, available time or an agreed deadline.

04

Update the plan honestly

After a session, record what was finished. Re-estimate work that took longer than expected. An extension or support request must follow your institution’s process; a calculator cannot change that policy.

A worked example

Example: 9 tasks at 40 minutes require 6 hours. If you have only 4 hours, the gap is 2 hours. Redrawing the timetable does not remove that gap. Check the essential tasks, revise inaccurate estimates, or discuss options with the course team.

A common pitfall

Scheduling an entire overdue task for every spare evening makes the same work appear several times. Count each task once.

Put it into practice

Use the workload check to quantify the gap and choose the next feasible task.
